The foundation GURI - Making Life Better is a nonprofit organization established in 2011 by the First lady of the Republic of Niger, Mrs. Aissata Issoufou Mahamadou. A vast, arid state on the edge of the Sahara desert, Niger is the largest country in West Africa and consistently one of the lowest-ranked in the United Nations' Human Development Index (HDI). With a fertility rate of 7.6 children per woman, the highest in the world, the average annual growth rate of the population is estimated at 3.3 %, which explains the exorbitant pressure on natural resources. GURI -- Making Life Better is dedicated to providing assistance to Niger's most vulnerable populations by increasing health, education, and environmental awareness through bold humanitarian initiatives. Since its launch, the foundation has made significant progress in the protection of mothers and children against HIV/AIDS, created more accessible education and training opportunities for girls, and continues to raise consciousness of the ongoing fight against deforestation and desertification.
